Christmas Celebrations in Mexico: Las Posadas

Christmas in Mexico isn’t just about Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, in fact, celebrations start on December 16th and extend into the first week of January. The holiday season is the perfect time for a Vallarta – Nayarit timeshare vacation for many reasons, but one of the top reasons why buying a timeshare around this time is a great idea are Las Posadas, an annual Mexican Christmas tradition.

These colourful festivities commemorate the voyage, or Holy Pilgrimage, that Mary and Joseph made from Bethlehem in search of shelter. Posada translates literally into “shelter” or “inn”, and it is common for Mexican families, friends, and neighbours participate in processions re-enacting the Pilgrimage. For nine days from the 16th to the 24th, someone takes a turn hosting a Mexican Posada fiesta in each of their homes on each of the nights leading up to Noche Buena or Christmas Eve.

Celebrations start with everyone gathering with candles and singing certain religious hymns representing the hosts and the “pilgrims” and it is also common for there to be a piñata in the form of a 7 pointed star, representing the 7 deadly sins that need to be destroyed. Once the piñata has been destroyed and all the candy has been collected from the centre, everyone proceeds to do what is done all over the world for Christmas: eat, drink, and be merry. All kinds of delicious traditional foods and drinks are served for everyone to enjoy while cheerfully socializing with friends, family, and neighbours.

While owning a timeshare in Mexico, you can choose to host one of these Posadas yourself! Invite friends, family, and neighbours over for some fun and games with a piñata, delicious food, and traditional beverages. After all, that is the spirit of Christmas isn’t it? Eating, drinking, and being merry!
