  • Altars: Whether you visit a school, office, or even a hotel lobby during this holiday, you will notice the presence of decorated altars. Covered in orange marigolds, candies, candles, and all types of personal offerings, these altars are made to honor the deceased.
  • Offerings for the deceased: On many of these altars you can see an assortment of interesting items. From alcohol and favorite items of the deceased adults to toys and candy for deceased children, families bring things to remember their loved ones.
  • Visiting the cemetery: While many will set up the altars in their homes, others will set them up near the graves of their deceased loved ones. Some will spend hours keeping vigil over the graves on the Day of the Dead.
  • Candy skulls: It may sound macabre, but children and adults follow this tradition of eating a skull made of sugar, chocolate, or amaranth and a small sign with their name. They even organize exchanges in schools and offices to preserve this habit that seeks to add a sweet touch to the bitter aspect of death.
