Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit at the Forefront of Sustainable Tourism

Puerto Vallarta recently celebrated its 100 year anniversary since its denomination as a municipality. And due to the boom in tourism, the municipality has spent the last 40 years being responsible for preserving the identity of the area, while also respecting the biodiversity that is one of the biggest attractions of Banderas Bay.

The development of tourism in the Riviera Nayarit is even more recent and is also inscribed in a spirit of sustainable tourism. Both destinations have beaches recognized with the Blue Flag distinction, which is awarded for responsible environmental management. This will undoubtedly have an impact on attracting more tourists who are conscious about the conservation of the planet without sacrificing a great vacation experience; or in other words, sustainable tourism.

Recently, the Secretary of Tourism announced that Mexico became the first country in America to obtain Blue Flag certification for 53 of its beaches, almost 20% of which are located within Banderas Bay.

The "Blue Flag" focuses on verifying the conditions of the coastal environment, water quality, safety and access for all people, and is renewed year after year.

In Puerto Vallarta, there are 8 beaches that have achieved their certification again this year (Amapas, Garza Blanca, Camarones, Conchas Chinas I and II, Palmares, Sheraton and Playa de Oro); while there were also more recognized in the Riviera Nayarit in Nuevo Vallarta and other locations.

The Blue Flag also includes a section that includes constant efforts to improve conditions, support the dissemination of information about the program, and provide environmental education for communities and visitors.
