Luis Antonio Angarita Mayorga is married and father to two children. He studied hospitality in the hotel industry in the United States, working in leading chains such as Hyatt, Hilton and Intercontinental. He was in the Dominican Republic for a time and upon returning to Mexico, he joined the Hotel Krystal, later presiding over the Convention and Visitors Bureau in Puerto Vallarta. He is currently General Manager of the Hotel Velas Vallarta and talks to us today about the timeshare industry.

“Among the positive facets of timeshare is the guarantee of repeat visitors, that is, it provides a stable, loyal and consistent market.”

“Sometimes we are mistaken when we use the word developer, the word investor and the word tourist. The developer is the one who drives and funds these projects. The investors are the ones who, with their savings, come down and purchase a condominium, a plot of land, or invest in a vacation week for ten or twenty years. The investor, first believed in Mexico, then in Puerto Vallarta and finally in the development to invest their savings (five, ten or twenty thousand dollars) to become a part of the destiny. A tourist generally comes to enjoy the destination for pleasure or business, and also has purchase potential, and the capacity for spending and therefore becomes dependent of the quality of service we provide.”

“For this reason, and in this case, I believe that we should concentrate on the investor who purchased a week of vacations for the next twenty or thirty years.”

“I have been in Puerto Vallarta for 24 years and have witnessed the development of timeshare in the Hotel Krystal and in Velas Vallarta. I have seen how the Regina, Paradise Village and many others started during the last 25 years and these are developers that have better buildings, better maintenance, expansions, remodeling and new business because this industry has been very progressive.”

“The timeshare (or the business of vacation clubs) not only produces money for the developer; there is a large economic flow in the environment starting with, of course the liner, the closer, the OPC, secretaries, administrative personnel, additional services such as tours, spa, boutiques….it's immeasurable.”

“Without this industry we wouldn't be who we are”

Luis Angarita indicated that without the industry of timeshare, our society would be very different; “for example, the residential developers would not have had the opportunity to sell their projects such as Valle Dorado, Los Patos, Las Moras, etc. It is very interesting how many employees on which we depend upon in this industry... The car agencies sell to them on credit and we have the ability to change them every few years because the overflow of money reaches the purses of all the social classes and their families. Many people who bought their house through Infonavit have been able to create savings with their salary and they have Afores and saving funds. The industry allows the developers to pay their Social Security (which for better or for worse we have it and there are plans to build a third facility thanks to these contributions.) We forget to analyze all of this sometimes.”

“In the last 15 years, the Riviera Nayarit has registered a great deal of development and an enormous amount of jobs, allowing employees to buy homes and provide education for their children. For example, the housekeeping staff, the maintenance staff and others who could not finish their basic education, have children in middle school, in high school and even university. This social development has a lot to do with the timeshare industry who must maintain the units, the pools, the gardens and the rooms clean. All of this generates employment... The Mayan Palace alone has nearly 5,000 employees.”

“If timeshare had not developed in Puerto Vallarta, we would probably still be the small fishing village that we were. What's more, the investors who have been here for fifteen or twenty years as proprietors of timeshare, today are renewing memberships because they don't want to leave Puerto Vallarta, their little share of paradise.”

“This presents another quality of timeshare: The investor becomes a promoter of Puerto Vallarta. Since they have invested here, they return home and talk to their friends and families about all the qualities of the destination, creating a multiplying effect that is better than any publicity. For a while now I have had the idea of working together to convert these people in real ambassadors of the destination using a flag or a coin that will express how proud their feel of Puerto Vallarta.”
