Tourism is a major source of revenue in Mexico, the country which, after the United States, sells the second largest number of timeshare memberships in the world.

Gonzalo Maqueda, Executive President of the Asociación Mexicana de Desarrolladores Turísticos (AMDETUR), said: "Mexico sells the second highest number of timeshare memberships after the United States and in recent years we have seen significant growth." He also commented that in 2013, 181,655 weeks were sold in various developments around Mexico, with an approximate value of $3.2 billion.

Cancun and the Riviera Maya, Vallarta • Nayarit and Los Cabos are the three dominant timeshare destinations in the country. Vacation club membership continues to dominate in the overseas market which accounts for 70% of the total sales with the remaining 30% of sales being generated domestically.

The average cost of a timeshare between $15,000 and $20,000 USD and is paid over a period of about 4 to 6 years.

Recommendations when buying a timeshare:

• There are memberships for every kind of traveler, allowing you to select the membership that best fits your needs.

• Before buying, make sure the company is registered with PROFECO, that the development is a member of an association like Adeprotur (which regulates the developments in Vallarta • Nayarit) and that it is transparent in all the financial aspects of your membership and clearly outlines what your membership will include.

• Upon signing a contract, take your time to read the terms carefully. This will ensure that you completely understand all the information regarding the rights and obligations of purchase.

• Choose a vacation club membership that fits your budget.
