The Tradition of El Grito

On September 15th, in cities and towns across Mexico, the tradition of “El Grito” will ring out as Mexicans celebrate their patriotic pride for their country for Mexican Independence Day.

The War of Independence began in the small town of Dolores, in the state of Guanajuato, when a Mexican Catholic priest by the name of Miguel Hidalgo, gave what is considered to be most famous speech in Mexican history. Hidalgo passionately urged the crowd to revolt and refuse to be patriots to Spain and the elite citizens of the country, famously finishing his speech with “El Grito”, the rebel yell:  Viva Mexico, Viva Mexico, Viva Mexico!

Every year this scene is recreated in plazas across the country, as young and old gather to raise their voices and show their Mexican pride.  The largest gathering in the Vallarta ● Nayarit region will be in Puerto Vallarta at the Plaza de las Armas, adjacent to the Malecon, on the evening of September 15th.  If you are enjoying your timeshare in Vallarta ● Nayarit during this time, join the community as it celebrates Mexico and stay to watch the fireworks display, listen to live music and sample some of Mexico’s famous street food.
