“Foodies” will love the variety and flavors found in the Vallarta-Nayarit area, a place that is well-known for being a must-visit for all things related to food and drink. The fresh seafood is most-definitely a favorite, but there are plenty of other reasons why the food in Puerto Vallarta and neighboring towns is “to-die-for.”

Gastronomy is so amazing here that every year there is something that will make any foodies dream come true: The International Gourmet Festival. If you are planning to stay at your timeshare during November, this is an excellent way to spend some time.

What is it exactly that makes Vallarta-Nayarit such a fabulous place to enjoy gourmet dishes and mouth-watering local cuisine? We’ll give you a few examples and you can see for yourself:

Enchiladas TapatiasThese Jalisco-born enchiladas are highly popular in the Vallarta-Nayarit region and with good reason. They are the ideal enchilada recipe for those who may not like meat, but love enchiladas.

With a combination of flavors in a puree of poblano peppers, tomatoes, onions, and garlic to the unique filling of more poblano peppers wrapped with softly fried tortillas accompanied with avocado and cheese, these enchiladas celebrate the beauty that is Mexican cuisine. Many recipes even call for a little tequila, and most for cream and milk to include in the sauce.

One word can be used to describe these Jalisco enchiladas: delectable!

Pescado embarazado: A very local specialty, you cannot stay in Puerto Vallarta without trying the “pescado embarazado” at least once. Meaning “pregnant fish,” this local delicacy is something that will satisfy everyone’s fish cravings on your trip.

Before you get just a bit horrified at the “fact” that you’re eating a pregnant fish, that’s just the name for this fish on a stick that is topped with lime, roasted on a grill, and topped with a delicious sauce known as salsa Huichol.

Birria: How does the sound of a little crispy and a little spicy sound to you? It makes my mouth water just thinking about it. What it is, is either beef or goat (you will find both here) stewed in a deliciously spicy soup/stew for several hours giving it a very delicious flavor. Of course, this dish wouldn’t be complete without the crispy tortillas to hold the birria in place and provide it with the perfect accompaniment. Make sure to ask for a cup of the “consome” (the stew). You will love it.

Whether you take a tour of the restaurants in the area or join walking tours dedicated to finding good food, or visit during the International Gourmet Festival, you can be sure that the food will be undoubtedly satisfying. Puerto Vallarta is a place full of international and local cuisine, so there is always something for everyone.
