Traditional Mexican cuisine has been cataloged by the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture or UNESCO, as an intangible heritage of humanity for its integral aspect at the cultural level. Not only because it involves specific ingredients or ways of preparation, but also because agrarian processes are immersed in the cultivation and supply of the food that constitutes each dish and some even include social rituals.

Of course, this tradition as a social process has been converted, by the mixing of foods and processes that come from other parts of the world. Which makes the offer of gastronomy that is found in the country, and particularly in Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit, to be of an incredible variety with memorable and unique experiences at every step. The same is to be said for the restaurants in the timeshare developments, resorts, hotels that are haute cuisine restaurants of the region.

But a common recommendation that is heard from travelers and locals is not to skip the food that is sold on the streets. We know: The sensible advice is to do exactly the opposite! But if you want to live the experience that makes many visitors fall in love, you definitely have to try these delicacies prepared at street level.

Therefore, we present some of the best street dishes that you can enjoy every time you return to your timeshare in Puerto Vallarta. But be warned, you will salivate just by reading the next part of the text.

  • Birria. A Jalisco classic that consists of lamb meat - or in some regions, goat meat - covered in a spicy sauce and then is baked underground after being covered with maguey leaves, served with the broth and in tacos.
  • Pescado “Embarazado”. This delicious typical Vallarta snack consists of fish fillet - and sometimes shrimp - that are marinated in a guajillo chile sauce, axiote, butter and garlic. Its peculiar name is a play on words that refers to being placed on a skewer (on a stick) to later be roasted on charcoal.
  • Tacos de Cabeza (head). As the name implies, the head of the beef is cooked with spices for several hours, resulting in one of the softest meats that you can enjoy in tacos with a green or red salsa, a little chopped onion and cilantro. They are usually accompanied by the consommé, or broth, in which the meat was cooked.
  • Churros. To a certain extent we could say that they are elongated donuts, but although it is also a fried bread, they are not spongy but crunchy. They are delightful bathed in sugar and sometimes they are filled with rompope, Nutella, cajeta, dulce de leche, etc.
  • Carnitas. Carnitas consist of deep frying or comfiture of the pork meat -even its viscera- in its own fat. They are usually served in tacos made with corn tortillas, chopped onions and cilantro, and salsa. This seemingly simple delicacy has an extraordinary flavor and its price is incredibly accessible as all other the options we’ve presented to you.
