Although Puerto Vallarta may not be the Christmas winter wonderland you see in the movies, there is something to be said about celebrating winter holidays in a tropical paradise. It isn’t cold, for one. Besides enjoying daily sunshine and being within a stone’s throw of the beach the majority of the time, Puerto Vallarta is also jam packed with unique celebrations and events for Christmas and New Year’s. The reality is, Christmas lasts essentially the entire month of December here.

During the first twelve days of December, a unique Mexican cultural celebration, known as Las Peregrinaciones a la Virgen de Guadalupe, takes place in Puerto Vallarta. This year, more than 100,000 people are expected to make the pilgrimage to visit the iconic Parish of Guadalupe located in Vallarta’s centro. If you’d like to learn more in depth about this cultural December tradition, please visit last week’s blog.

Beginning nine days before Christmas Eve, Mexican tradition begins preparing for the holiday by celebrating Las Posadas. The first Posada, a festivity with great religious meaning that observes the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, which consists of a procession honoring the night they searched for refuge in Bethlehem. Once the procession has ended, the party begins. Entire neighborhoods come together to share food, drink and laughter. These posadas extend throughout the nine days leading up to Christmas, so we guarantee you’ll find one to partake in if you’re visiting Puerto Vallarta at that time.

During Christmas season in Puerto Vallarta, you’ll find all kinds of traditional Mexican food and drink, along with cultural celebrations and plenty of opportunity to experience Christmas in a whole different light. Not only is it one of the most festive times of the year, but it’s also the perfect time to be visiting your timeshare in Puerto Vallarta or Riviera Nayarit due to perfect weather, and a long itinerary of things to do.
