With the travel industry returning back to normal following the COVID-19 pandemic, Mexico faces the challenge of solidifying its position as an attractive destination for international travelers, in addition to maintaining the interest of national vacationers. The vacation ownership field has become very important in local tourism, as said by the Mexican Association of Tourism Developers (Amdetur).

They’ve highlighted the importance of the Mexican tourism industry having diverse property offers, such as vacation ownership - timeshare -, to solidify its leadership in the worldwide tourism industry.

Within the framework of World Tourism Day, which is celebrated on September 27, AMDETUR said that Mexico is ranked sixth in arrivals in the world, according to the World Tourism Organization.

They also highlighted that so far this year, one of the main drivers of the industry's growth is having differentiated offers in terms of destinations and segments, such as vacation ownership, travel clubs or hotels.

The organization indicated that in the first seven months of 2023, Mexico registered income from international visitors of 18.2 billion dollars and the industry represents around 10 percent of the National Gross Domestic Product, according to the Anáhuac Tourism Research and Competitiveness Center (Cicotur ).

Currently, he noted, the main source markets for international travel for the country are the United States, Canada, Colombia and the United Kingdom, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

According to AMDETUR, these numbers are largely possible thanks to the loyalty generated by concepts such as vacation ownership, where membership owners have consistently been the first to return to vacation after challenging seasons.

AMDETUR has also noted that many hotels in Mexico's main destinations have between 15 and 35 percent guaranteed occupancy during peak seasons thanks to vacation ownership.

“Today we have the task of maintaining the momentum of recent years hand in hand with this hybrid offer and the industry's effort to position Mexico as an attractive destination nationally and internationally,” said Rosario Rodríguez, president of AMDETUR and general director for Royal Holiday Group.

The Association also noted the importance of the main leaders of the Mexican tourism industry providing vacationers with a hybrid hotel and vacation ownership offer.

They’ve indicated that in recent years, Mexico has positioned itself as one of the world leaders in the vacation property industry, which in 2022 recorded revenues of $5.5 billion, which represented a growth of 20 percent compared to the previous year.

“The Mexican market is incredibly strong and resilient, and today we have every opportunity to solidify our leadership position. We can see the potential of our country in the development of destinations such as Los Cabos and Nuevo Vallarta, which exemplify the great things that our country has to offer tourists from all markets,” added Rosario Rodríguez.
