During the 35th Annual International Tourism Fair (FITUR) held in Madrid, Spain, Vallarta • Nayarit was awarded the Excellence Award for actions undertaken by the general public, businesses and local authorities.

The Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau was awarded for their focus on sustainable tourism across 5 projects: Protection of Marietas Islands and humpback whales, EarthCheck Nuevo Vallarta, Blue Flag Certification, Clean Beaches Certification and Riviera Nayarit Beach Cleaning Network.

Roberto Sandoval, Governor of Nayarit, was on hand to receive the award and said that he accepted "on behalf of all of the residents of Nayarit. We take it as a new impetus to continue working." He also announced that Nayarit has been one of the Mexican states with the highest growth in tourism in recent years.

The Puerto Vallarta Convention and Visitors Bureau received the Excellence Award for the "Reengineering Puerto Vallarta Tourism Action Plan" which involves improvements to infrastructure and heritage sites, as well as a formal program of training and awareness directed at the local population to become hosts/ambassadors of destination.

Winning these awards meant that Vallarta • Nayarit was promoted to the thousands of wholesalers, tour operators, travel agencies, hotel chains, media, agencies, associations and authorities who were present at FITUR 2015.

The Excellence Awards were created in 2005 by the communication group "Grupo Excelencias," in order to promote excellence in different field related to tourism and culture.
