From September 15th to 16th every year, Mexicans around the world will be celebrating a monumental moment in the history of the country: Mexico’s independence from Spain.

The date of September 16th actually symbolizes the beginning of the independence movement. On this day, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest also known as Father Hidalgo, gave the first cry for independence with an iconic speech in Dolores, Guanajuato, and adopted the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe to represent the endeavor.

New Spain’people (today Mexico) came to the call of Father Hidalgo and this began a decade-long movement that would eventually prevail in the Independence of Mexico from the Spanish.

Actually, on September 15th at 11pm, according to Mexican tradition, the acting Mexican president will ring the bell from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City and gives a speech that emulates the Grito de Dolores, in which he takes up words and ideas from the one given by Miguel Hidalgo in 1810.

The celebrations continue throughout the day on September 16th across the country with parades, fireworks, reenactments, concerts, and horse rider performances.
