Resilience, regeneration and transitions: perspective of the tourism sector

The tourism industry, highly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, represented approximately 9% of GDP in 2019 (in current values), according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

Since this health crisis, most companies in various sectors have implemented a COVID-19 management committee, return-to-office protocols, and contagion prevention procedures, to adapt to the new normal.

As long as international borders remain closed and travel restrictions from other countries continue, factors such as post-lockdown travel planning and the rise of local tourism can benefit the industry in the short term.

In addition to having ground transfer options, airlines strive to fill their flights through discounts and flexibility in travel dates and changes.

As a whole, this could mean a recovery after the decrease in national tourism consumption, which generally constitutes almost all of the income from this item, and which in April 2020 decreased 93.7% compared to the same period of 2019, while that the average variation used to be close to 1.9% per year since 2008, as mentioned by INEGI.

According to specialists, there are three factors, not exclusive, that will be decisive in the rebound of the tourism sector towards its recovery:

Technology adoption: The application of digital solutions will be essential to achieve a transition to the new normal.

Transformation of the business model: Some leaders in the sector have evaluated redirecting their business towards the alternative of co-living and multi-family. Thanks to the growing development of prop-tech, through platforms for vacation rentals or long-stay rentals, a new line of business is being committed that involves actions such as converting spaces that previously had a hotel use.

Diversification of services: This factor is considered as one of the possible success scenarios in the tourism consumption chain. Clients could opt for proposals that avoid crowds and obtain more exclusive experiences.
