From April to June 2021, the Riviera Nayarit CVB spearheaded a crusade to help raise awareness about the importance of separating waste, through environmental education talks, environmental fairs, and beach cleanups, among other activities.

The Riviera Nayarit is committed to caring for the environment and promoting sustainable tourism with actions such as the “Sorting Counts” campaign, in effect from April to June 2021. Throughout this period, speakers gave lectures on environmental education, and volunteers cleaned beaches, among other activities.

The Riviera Nayarit CVB’s s Tourism Development division trained 162 employees from the sector and 25 workers from the Waste Management and Public Works departments of the Banderas Bay Trust (FIBBA). It also had outstanding participation in the Environmental Fair of the Community Center Entre Amigos de San Pancho and visited the Casa Hogar Manos de Amor por Bahía, sharing the importance of waste separation with over 100 children and teachers.

Beach cleanup

Even though the Riviera Nayarit Beach Cleanup Network activities were suspended in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, they were carried out on schedule during the “Sorting Counts” campaign, following all biosafety protocols. As a result, there were five beach cleanups completed with the support of the Iberostar Playa Mita, Hard Rock Vallarta and RIU hotels, and the Ángeles de Bucerías A.C. and Entre Amigos de San Pancho organizations. Their work kept the waste from reaching the sea.

Marc Murphy, managing director of the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), mentioned that his office remains committed to offering a destination that allows different types of travelers to enjoy safe spaces in unique natural settings.

“We want to create greater awareness of the travel experiences available in the Riviera Nayarit. But in doing so, we also want to ensure that our tourism activities do not harm the environment or the local community,” he said.

Separating waste can be a complicated task. Sometimes it’s about space, sometimes it’s about time, and sometimes we don’t know if it really does any good because the waste ends up in the trucks and goes to the same place. The truth is, the task is not time-consuming, it requires everyone’s collaboration, and it has significant benefits, as described below:

  • It reduces the amount of waste generated.
  • It promotes recycling to recover resources, which reduces the extraction and use of raw materials.
  • Extends the useful life of products by promoting their maintenance and repair.
  • Promotes resource savings.
  • Promotes employment.

The Riviera Nayarit is a safe destination. Our hotels, restaurants, and tourist establishments follow all the health protocols established by the Federal Government’s Ministry of Health and operate at the allowed capacities. Access to the beaches is limited. Be a responsible tourist: wear your mask and keep your distance.
