Puerto Vallarta is a birdwatcher's paradise home to more than 350 species of birds. Here are some experiences visitors may want to consider if they want to see some of the destination's most spectacular residents.   • The Military Macaw Sanctuary - This 7-hour tour, available November through June on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, provides participants with an experienced guide who will show them the efforts to protect the colorful macaws native to the area. Possible sightings include yellow grosbeak, blue mockingbird, Citreoline trogon, and flammulated flycatcher. The tour costs US$99 for adults (ages 12 and older) and US$79 for children (ages 4 to 11).

  • Birds of Paradise at the Vallarta Botanical Garden with Ecotours Vallarta - Located in the tropical highlands of Puerto Vallarta, the Vallarta Botanical Garden was created to preserve the native flora of the area. This sanctuary has attracted many high ecological importance nesting species, including yellow-winged warblers, San Blas jays, woodpeckers, multiple hummingbirds, and other tropical bird species. The 5-hour tour is available daily from December through March (except holidays) and Tuesday through Sunday from April through November. The tour costs US$99 for adults (over 12 years old) and US$79.20 for children (4 to 11 years old).
